Chomsky, Noam: Necessary Illusions: Thought Control in Democratic
Societies. Boston, MS: South End Press, 1989 • One
of Chomsky's several intensely researched and footnoted discussions
of media's influence on democracy.
Commoner, Barry: Making Peace with the Planet.
NY: Pantheon Books, 1975• Revised in 1990; the renowned environmentalist
from the 1960's evaluates environmental reform and concludes prevention
is the only cure for pollution.
Gore, Senator Al: Earth In the Balance; Ecology and the
Human Spirit. Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1992 •
An impassioned discussion of environmentalism, equating U.S. denial
of environmental problems with denial in a dysfunctional family.
Gorz, Andre: Ecology as Politics. Boston, South
End Press, 1980 • French socialist thinker links the ecology
movement with the struggle for greater social change.
Illich, Ivan: Tools for Conviviality. Berkeley:
Heyday Books, 1973 • Argues that institutionalized tools have
grown past their usefulness and how enslave rather than liberate.
