10 Best Surprises of 2010Ear Candy from Glass Eye It’s hard to imagine that, in a time of 3-D televisions, computer graphics, and flying cars (they’re coming, you just wait) we’d get new audio plays harkening back to the classic radio dramas of the golden age. The brain child of Glass Eye Pix (The Last Winter, I Sell the Dead) chief Larry Fessenden and Glenn McQuaid, Tales from Beyond the Pale draws its influence from the radio dramas of Orson Welles, Alfred Hitchcock and Boris Karloff. And it’s more than just a fun bit of kitsch, featuring an impressive vocal cast that has included Vincent D’Onofrio, Ron Perlman, James Le Gros and Kevin Corrigan. The multi-faceted Fessenden (also a producer, actor, director and writer) hosts the episodes himself and has garnered talented genre directors such as Paul Solet, JT Petty and Simon Rumley. The project’s success certainly proves the old adage that sometimes simple is best. |

Jim Mickle's sophomore film is a 70s style road trip through a grim apocalypse, a land where the men don't talk much because they're too busy cutting down the undead. The living may not be much but it beats a death that never ends. This is a film that is totally comfortable with being a b-list, genre flick, a straight-up shot of exploitation moonshine with no chaser and as such it is the best movie it could possibly be. Just think of Jim Mickle as an American Neil Marshall (The Descent, Dog Soldiers) and you'll have an idea of what you're in for." "highly satisfying low-budget horror-thriller from helmer/co-writer Jim Mickle. Making strong use of Western iconography and conventions... Highly cinematic, pitch-perfect yarn... Taking on a larger canvas than that of "Mulberry Street," Mickel rises to the challenge, confirming his reputation as an emerging horror auteur." "Jim Mickle's Stake Land shows us an America perhaps in the not-too-distant future wherein vampires have begun to dominate, and society has essentially been splintered into small bands of survivors, with two clear cut camps: religious fundamentalists and the sane. In these days of Tea Party hysteria, this is all too uncomfortably familiar. More a road movie than a vamp flick, Stake Land reveals that, in an age of fanaticism and intolerance, vampires are the least of our worries. Jeff Grace contributes a compelling score that draws as much from symphonic work as it does from early Americana and Smithsonian Folkways recordings. Mickle spoke of how the score moved backward in time, almost as if the characters were heading back into pioneer days, evoking old ghosts and decaying dreams. In fact, the film felt very much like we were witnessing a societal de-evolution, a return to primal needs and fears, where survival is not a right, but a privilege, and the score at times reinforces this idea, and at times juxtaposes it, all to great effect. The score acts almost like another narrative device, in the same way that the camera, the narration, and the plot all have us floating down the river at the same pace. The way that all these elements seamlessly mesh and play off each other is nothing short of cinematic excellence, and really showcases the power and importance of the "director". Stake Land is one more addition to the super solid Glass Eye Pix/Scareflix stable, and everyone involved has every right to be very, very proud of what we saw last night." It isn't trying to convince anybody that OMG This Totally Happened -- those innocent days are behind us -- rather, it's pretending to be pretending that it's real. So some good acting and decent scares get entombed within too many dull postmodern iterations. That's definitely not a crime, but it bugs me that this particular indie-horror formula gets cranked out to a large audience, over and over again, while something genuinely terrifying and original, like Graham Reznick's "I Can See You," comes and goes unnoticed. As driven as Roger Corman; as authentic as John Cassavetes; as subversive, bold and transgressive as Stuart Gordon. In the early 1990s rush of independent film revelry, while the world was rightly fawning over the collective visions of a new band(e) of vibrant, cine-smart filmmakers -- among their number Allison Anders, Whit Stillman, Richard Linklater and, of course, Quentin Tarantino -- one name was lost in furore over the free ideals, cultured formalism and rampant creative frivolity of this post-Soderbergh Sundance set. The name was Larry Fessenden. It would be disingenuous to ever imagine that he would *really* be included on such a striking role-call. Yet looking back at the down-and-dirty-pictures epoch with eyes that are two decades older, it’s strange that Fessenden’s dramatically bold, genuinely unkempt mindset wasn’t at least latched upon with the same fervour that champions of the indie movement afforded less-resilient talents like Nick Gomez or Alexandre Rockwell. Three pictures in particular, a trio that would become Fessenden’s Trilogy Of Terror, sum up his slightly feverish outlook on the world. It’s a world stuck between twin pillars: ennui at the emotional upheavals of simply living in contemporary society; and a basic fear of it. Out of college I got hired by an independent filmmaker named Larry Fessenden to do an 86-page adaptation of the movie he was directing, “The Wendigo”. It got published and can probably still be found floating around ebay or 25¢ bins. The Wendigo comic led to other work with Fessenden including storyboards and other film related illustrations, but it also led to a few other comic projects. We made a free comic for the ’04 elections called “What are you voting for?” and I did another adaptation for Fessenden’s most recent film, “The Last Winter.” Working for Fessenden was essential in my growth as an artist. It allowed me to learn my craft and still eek out a meager living while I did so.

March 6 — In an interview on movie blog BEYOND THE GREEN DOOR between filmmaker JEREMIAH KIPP (director THE POD, CONTACT; assistant director on AUTOMATONS, I SELL THE DEAD) and journalist LAUREN WISSOT (Filmmaker magazine article on Glass Eye Pix), Kipp offers this generous comment about Fessenden and horror movies. LW: What attracts you to the horror genre? I remember asking the same thing of Larry Fessenden – who you’ve worked with – when I interviewed him for Filmmaker, and he responded that for him the genre itself is really secondary. For whatever reasons the stories he wants to tell end up taking that particular form. JK: Larry Fessenden is one of the most important New York filmmakers working today, beyond even the scope of the horror genre. But what attracts him to this place, I think, is the way horror movies take something we are afraid of in real life and pushes it towards the metaphorical. Hansel and Gretel would be a tale of social realism documenting starvation, poverty and child abuse were it not for the imaginative leap it takes into the magical: a gingerbread house, a witch who cooks and eats little kids, and so on. Naturalism only gets us so far; horror delves further, and creates images for feelings we have a difficult time expressing literally. In “Contact”, two lovers kiss, their faces melt together, and suddenly we have an image fraught with possible meaning. Horror movies are like poetry in this way. If Larry were to remake his vampire film “Habit” now as a mid-life crisis movie, it might be incredibly powerful, since I think he is fed on by parasites, including myself, who pull his time away from what he should be doing, which is what he was born to do, which is to direct films. |

MPI Media Group's Dark Sky Films will finance and produce along with Larry Fessenden's Glass Eye Pix. Derek Curl, Fessenden and Peter Phok produce.
West said he intends for Innkeepers to be "a truly terrifying" follow-up to his last pic. Lensing is set to commence in Connecticut this spring.

One of the Best HORROR films of the DECADE
Here's the thing about Larry Fessenden. He's an intellectual horror filmmaker. He uses his films as a way to explore philosophical ideas like subjective perception (Habit) and the random cruelty of life (Wendigo). His movies are frequently atmospheric and involving, and while the gulf between the visceral and cerebral can be awkward, I find his films consistently exciting. That admiration continues with The Last Winter, which is his biggest film yet, his most ambitious, and, at times, his best. This time, Fessenden has oil on the mind, and his way of adapting such a contemporary fear into the horror sphere is brilliant: since oil is composed of dead animal and plant matter, it's not much of a stretch to suggest that humanity's living on the ghosts of the ancient dead. Odd post in the middle of a debate about 90's movies on Pop Syndicate: That being said, the be all, and end all of psychological horror films for me was Larry Fessenden’s Habit (1996). I once watched it seven consecutive nights in a row. What Ice Station Zebra was for Howard Hughes, Habit is for me. Very nice NYC settings, great soundtrack that perfectly mixes original classical and pop songs, great cinema verite directing and acting. The problem is, it’s a very low key, slow burn about cultural vampirism and narcissism which tends to put people off. But it’s a brilliant movie that I really obsess over. Fessenden also made 1991’s No Telling, which is also a decent psychological horror film. full post |
