BEST OF 2010...

2010: THE YEAR IN HORROR—SAM’S TOP 10 MOVIES
Also, you’ve severely missed out if you haven’t even dipped a toe into the ocean of quality that is TALES FROM BEYOND THE PALE. More than just creating fun throwbacks, the team at Glass Eye Pix and the filmmakers they’ve assembled are very much crafting great little spookfests that remind us why we love horror storytelling in general.

Horror in Review: 10 Best Surprises of 2010

Ear Candy from Glass Eye

It’s hard to imagine that, in a time of 3-D televisions, computer graphics, and flying cars (they’re coming, you just wait) we’d get new audio plays harkening back to the classic radio dramas of the golden age. The brain child of Glass Eye Pix (The Last Winter, I Sell the Dead) chief Larry Fessenden and Glenn McQuaid, Tales from Beyond the Pale draws its influence from the radio dramas of Orson Welles, Alfred Hitchcock and Boris Karloff.
And it’s more than just a fun bit of kitsch, featuring an impressive vocal cast that has included Vincent D’Onofrio, Ron Perlman, James Le Gros and Kevin Corrigan. The multi-faceted Fessenden (also a producer, actor, director and writer) hosts the episodes himself and has garnered talented genre directors such as Paul Solet, JT Petty and Simon Rumley. The project’s success certainly proves the old adage that sometimes simple is best.

top ten movies of 2010STAKE LAND

The
American horror film of the year. Plain and simple.

Jim Mickle's sophomore film is a 70s style road trip through a grim apocalypse, a land where the men don't talk much because they're too busy cutting down the undead. The living may not be much but it beats a death that never ends.

Mickle's a director with the good sense to know when to back off and when to go for the throat and he is well matched once again with his star and writing partner Nick Damici. — Todd Brown:

“Glass Eye Pix generalissimo Larry Fessenden and cohort Glenn McQuaid share this burgeoning affection
for creepy old-time radio gems, and are overseeing their own original take with the TALES FROM BEYOND THE PALE web series.
With features like THE HOUSE OF THE DEVIL and the upcoming STAKE LAND,
Glass Eye is building a serious rep in the film world for quality artistic productions, and thus expectations
were pretty darn high as Fango plugged its earphones into its new single-sensory venture...

D’Onofrio manages to make audio drama feel fresh again with every subtle inflection.
He’s ably supported by Fessenden’s reappearance as part of the tale, reprising his FEAST role of private eye Bill Coley...

If these first two installments are any indication, listeners can expect wildly different approaches
and unpredictable flavors housed between Fessenden’s host bumpers as TALES FROM BEYOND THE PALE continues its first season...”

Sept 23 — Voltaire has another Macabre Movie in the works

... Macabre artist-musician-filmmaker Voltaire is always busy, especially when Halloween draws near... but this year, Gotham's mad jack-of-all-trades has even more on his plate than usual. Among his many projects, one of the most interesting is a series of amazing stop-motion horror shorts, which have been a hit on the indie film festival circuit for a couple of years now. One of his new animations – an opening sequence for Larry Fessenden's highly anticipated horror radio series Tales From Beyond the Pale – is already being expanded into a much larger film.

Fessenden and his production company Glass Eye Pix (whose projects include House of the Devil and Stake Land), approached Voltaire to create the animated opening for their cool retro-horror radio show...

Stake Land wins Midnight Madness People”s Choice Award
at the 2010 Toronto Film Festival

17 September 2010 — STAKE LAND world premiere
at the TORONTO INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL

"blows away lots of the ostensibly more ambitious films also playing at the Toronto Film Festival simply through the purity of its ambitions and the rough, redneck energy of its filmmaking. This is a film that is totally comfortable with being a b-list, genre flick, a straight-up shot of exploitation moonshine with no chaser and as such it is the best movie it could possibly be. Just think of Jim Mickle as an American Neil Marshall (The Descent, Dog Soldiers) and you'll have an idea of what you're in for."
TWITCH

"highly satisfying low-budget horror-thriller from helmer/co-writer Jim Mickle. Making strong use of Western iconography and conventions... Highly cinematic, pitch-perfect yarn... Taking on a larger canvas than that of "Mulberry Street," Mickel rises to the challenge, confirming his reputation as an emerging horror auteur."
VARIETY

"Jim Mickle's Stake Land shows us an America perhaps in the not-too-distant future wherein vampires have begun to dominate, and society has essentially been splintered into small bands of survivors, with two clear cut camps: religious fundamentalists and the sane. In these days of Tea Party hysteria, this is all too uncomfortably familiar. More a road movie than a vamp flick, Stake Land reveals that, in an age of fanaticism and intolerance, vampires are the least of our worries.

Jeff Grace contributes a compelling score that draws as much from symphonic work as it does from early Americana and Smithsonian Folkways recordings. Mickle spoke of how the score moved backward in time, almost as if the characters were heading back into pioneer days, evoking old ghosts and decaying dreams. In fact, the film felt very much like we were witnessing a societal de-evolution, a return to primal needs and fears, where survival is not a right, but a privilege, and the score at times reinforces this idea, and at times juxtaposes it, all to great effect. The score acts almost like another narrative device, in the same way that the camera, the narration, and the plot all have us floating down the river at the same pace. The way that all these elements seamlessly mesh and play off each other is nothing short of cinematic excellence, and really showcases the power and importance of the "director".

Stake Land is one more addition to the super solid Glass Eye Pix/Scareflix stable, and everyone involved has every right to be very, very proud of what we saw last night."
THE FILM BUFF BLOG

"The best Midnight Madness film of the year, and the first that could be considered truly great.
Director Jim Mickle and Larry Fessenden’s Glass Eye Pix have made their best film so far.

Stake Land is a fantastically scary and heartbreaking film that never betrays its low-budget roots."
MISTER HORROR.COM

"it's so damn good...
finding the right level of bleakness is the single most important job any post-apocalyptic film has.
Stakeland finds it inside the first five minutes of the movie, and never lets it go."

But of the several horror movies included this year, the one Geddes has pegged to emerge as a sleeper hit is Stake Land,

“No one’s got any expectations for it,” Geddes says. “There’s no big stars, it’s a second-time director,
but I think it’s really going to surprise people. It’s a road movie with vampires but it’s also just a really chilling postapocalpytic view.”

August 26: Graham Reznick in the news

Solon's Andrew O'Hehir celebrates I CAN SEE YOU
in his review of THE LAST EXORCISM
""The Last Exorcism" undermines itself because it's just a cheapo horror movie with a gimmicky framing device. It isn't trying to convince anybody that OMG This Totally Happened -- those innocent days are behind us -- rather, it's pretending to be pretending that it's real. So some good acting and decent scares get entombed within too many dull postmodern iterations. That's definitely not a crime, but it bugs me that this particular indie-horror formula gets cranked out to a large audience, over and over again, while something genuinely terrifying and original, like Graham Reznick's "I Can See You," comes and goes unnoticed. 28 JULY, VARIETY REPORTS:

Horror thesps invited to a 'Gathering'
Producers aim for Englund, Blair for new fright flick

By DAVE MCNARY

Treasure Entertainment, in association with Highland Myst Entertainment, is aiming to bring together a host of high-profile horror actors in "The Gathering," led by Doug Bradley, Udo Kier and William Sadler.

Producers Mark Heidelberger ("Harsh Times") and Jesse Felsot are in talks with Robert Englund (the original Freddy Krueger) and Linda Blair of "The Exorcist" to join the project, set to go into production late this year or in early 2011.

Jon Keeyes ("American Nightmare") has been tapped to direct from Carl Kirshner's script, set up as a horror anthology containing half a dozen stories.

Thesps signed to appear include Bill Moseley, Clint Howard, David Naughton, Billy Drago, Larry Fessenden, Debbie Rochon, Adrienne King, Brian O'Halloran, Lin Shaye, Ellen Sandweiss, Brinke Stevens and Kiowa Gordon from the "Twilight" pics. link

18 July: Michael Rooker talks about HYPOTHERMIA in Fangoria:

HYPOTHERMIA was produced by Glass Eye Pix (THE LAST WINTER, THE HOUSE OF THE DEVIL, I SELL THE DEAD), which is headed by indie horror filmmaker Larry Fessenden. “Larry is just a regular guy. And the Glass Eye folks are HARD workers. It was a nice, fun little movie. Reminded me of when I did HENRY.”

“At a time when the Tea Party and Religious Right groups have
a stranglehold on “morality” and government, Satan Hates You
is just about the most timely horror film out there... full of piss and vinegar...
Normally the appearance of so many famous horror icons is a red flag for me,
but in this case, McKenney made some great casting decisions
that served the story rather than trivialize the actors...
another great entry into the genre by Monsterpants and Glass Eye Pix.
There’s something in the water there in NYC, and I’d love to have a pitcher of it.”

June 21 — LAFF Festival Wrap up:

BITTER FEAST
reviewed by John Anderson
Sunday June 20

It's the rare bit of horror that aspires to haute cuisine, and while "Bitter Feast" is accented with the occasional arterial geyser and McNugget-sized chunk of human flesh, it's really gore for the gourmet. First-rate performances by James Le Gros and Joshua Leonard, some novel tweaks to the standard revenge recipe and what may be cinema's first torture-porn abuse of a blogger lend this Joe Maggio-helmed thriller enough humor to complement its bloodlust. If marketing is executed with the proper panache, "Feast" could perform B.O. cookery...

But such are the topical grace notes of "Bitter Feast," which might have contented itself with being just another thriller, but instead blends celebrity psychology, media criticism and basic cuisine (what's your definition of an over-easy egg?) while also fusing Emeril Legasse and Norman Bates. Larry Fessenden certainly seems to be channeling Martin Balsam as a private eye who goes sniffing around Peter's remote New York State home in search of the missing T.J., and there's a bit of Vera Miles in the blogger's wife (Amy Semietz) as she's dragged into the nonfeeding frenzy. Fessenden, whose own directorial efforts have included the vampire-addiction pic "Habit" and the unnerving eco-anxiety chiller "The Last Winter," has geared production shingle Glass Eye Pix toward a hybrid of intellectual and visceral horror, and "Feast" is a prime example....

Tech credits are tops, notably Jeff Grace's score and its recurrent themes, and the beautiful work of d.p. Michael McDonough ("Winter's Bone")....

Exclusive: Mario Batali tucks into a ‘Bitter Feast’

LAFF: The Best of the Fest

CRITIC'S PICK: BITTER FEAST The premise seems like an extra act to Ratatouille: a disgraced celebrity chef (James LeGros) kidnaps a food blogger (Joshua Leonard) who slammed him, forcing a regime of torture and cooking lessons upon his quarry. In writer-director Joe Maggio's delightfully nasty Bitter Feast there are no heroes, only levels of villainy, with two outsize egos bruised in different ways.

Once the premise is launched, the film settles down to a simple series of mind-game one-on-ones between the chef and the blogger, each struggling to hold on to the safety of his carefully cultivated persona. Zesty fun for its actors, Feast is at once a sly parody of the celebrity-chef culture spawned by all the cable cooking shows and competitions, and a creepy little chamber-piece. Even Maggio's point of view on blogging captures something unique: Leonard's character likens himself to the Iron Sheik, applying an unlikely but apt wrestling analogy to online provocation.

The film's wonderfully wicked sensibility should come as no surprise to fans who notice the involvement of Larry Fessenden as producer and in a small role as a sleazy private detective. Fessenden, recently feted at the Aero, has become more influential and important as a producer and general facilitator of low-budget horror (not to mention his work with art-auteur Kelly Reichardt) than for the films he directs. If Bitter Feast is any indication, Joe Maggio is a name that can be placed alongside Fessenden protégé Ti West as one to watch out for. Revenge is a dish best served to order—raw and bloody—in this pitch-black thriller that will forever change the way you look at a frying pan. When a snarky online review spurs the cancellation of his TV cooking show and the loss of his restaurant, a pompous chef kidnaps the blogger he holds responsible (Sometimes leaving a nasty comment just isn’t enough) and serves up a buffet of brutal lessons in critical etiquette. Writer-director Joe Maggio provides plenty of meat and potatoes gore for fans of the genre, while applying liberal dollops of dark wit for those with a more refined palate.

As driven as Roger Corman; as authentic as John Cassavetes; as subversive, bold and transgressive as Stuart Gordon. In the early 1990s rush of independent film revelry, while the world was rightly fawning over the collective visions of a new band(e) of vibrant, cine-smart filmmakers -- among their number Allison Anders, Whit Stillman, Richard Linklater and, of course, Quentin Tarantino -- one name was lost in furore over the free ideals, cultured formalism and rampant creative frivolity of this post-Soderbergh Sundance set. The name was Larry Fessenden.

It would be disingenuous to ever imagine that he would *really* be included on such a striking role-call. Yet looking back at the down-and-dirty-pictures epoch with eyes that are two decades older, it’s strange that Fessenden’s dramatically bold, genuinely unkempt mindset wasn’t at least latched upon with the same fervour that champions of the indie movement afforded less-resilient talents like Nick Gomez or Alexandre Rockwell.

Three pictures in particular, a trio that would become Fessenden’s Trilogy Of Terror, sum up his slightly feverish outlook on the world. It’s a world stuck between twin pillars: ennui at the emotional upheavals of simply living in contemporary society; and a basic fear of it. The world is a deeply unsettling place and those who inhabit it make it so.

March 19
Glass Eye Pix comrade Brahm Revel interviewed in this week's Multiversity Comics

Out of college I got hired by an independent filmmaker named Larry Fessenden to do an 86-page adaptation of the movie he was directing, “The Wendigo”. It got published and can probably still be found floating around ebay or 25¢ bins. The Wendigo comic led to other work with Fessenden including storyboards and other film related illustrations, but it also led to a few other comic projects. We made a free comic for the ’04 elections called “What are you voting for?” and I did another adaptation for Fessenden’s most recent film, “The Last Winter.”

Working for Fessenden was essential in my growth as an artist. It allowed me to learn my craft and still eek out a meager living while I did so.

Corey Haim, Lost Boy
by Frank DiGiacomo March 10, 2010, 2:40 PM

When I learned of Corey Haim’s death this morning, I thought of a vampire movie. Not The Lost Boys, the movie that made Haim a bankable actor and enabled him to make a few dozen more largely dismissible pictures and one reality cable series with the other Corey from that picture, Corey Feldman. Rather, the movie that Haim’s untimely demise first brought to mind was Larry Fessenden’s 1996 independent feature Habit, in which Haim does not even appear. If you’re a fan of horror movies, which at their best are about the human condition, then you’re probably aware of Fessenden’s work. In the 90s and early 00’s, he deftly re-made the unholy trinity of Universal’s classic film monsters—Frankenstein, Dracula and The Wolfman—as meta-horror films in which humans proved to be the real monsters. Habit equated vampirism with addiction (in this case, alcoholism)—certainly not the only time that’s been done in a film, but one of the best. full article

March 6 — In an interview on movie blog BEYOND THE GREEN DOOR between filmmaker JEREMIAH KIPP (director THE POD, CONTACT; assistant director on AUTOMATONS, I SELL THE DEAD) and journalist LAUREN WISSOT (Filmmaker magazine article on Glass Eye Pix), Kipp offers this generous comment about Fessenden and horror movies.

LW: What attracts you to the horror genre? I remember asking the same thing of Larry Fessenden – who you’ve worked with – when I interviewed him for Filmmaker, and he responded that for him the genre itself is really secondary. For whatever reasons the stories he wants to tell end up taking that particular form.

JK: Larry Fessenden is one of the most important New York filmmakers working today, beyond even the scope of the horror genre. But what attracts him to this place, I think, is the way horror movies take something we are afraid of in real life and pushes it towards the metaphorical. Hansel and Gretel would be a tale of social realism documenting starvation, poverty and child abuse were it not for the imaginative leap it takes into the magical: a gingerbread house, a witch who cooks and eats little kids, and so on. Naturalism only gets us so far; horror delves further, and creates images for feelings we have a difficult time expressing literally. In “Contact”, two lovers kiss, their faces melt together, and suddenly we have an image fraught with possible meaning. Horror movies are like poetry in this way. If Larry were to remake his vampire film “Habit” now as a mid-life crisis movie, it might be incredibly powerful, since I think he is fed on by parasites, including myself, who pull his time away from what he should be doing, which is what he was born to do, which is to direct films.

LA TIMES
Writer-director-editor Ti West's retro thriller features long stretches where nothing much happens, outside of quiet, tense shots of a cash-strapped college student (Jocelin Donahue) exploring a creepy old house. Eventually, the movie does drip with gore and ring with screams, but what's made it a cult sensation is the way West allows genre fans to settle comfortably into the milieu of early-'80s horror schlock. The home video release is being handled just as smartly, with its almost avant-garde presentation of behind-the-scenes footage and its limited-edition VHS release, packaged in a puffy clamshell case (with a DVD thrown in).

GATEHOUSE NEWS SERVICE

"But most of all, “House of the Devil” succeeds because every element — the direction, the sound design, the performance, the sets and that last blast of bloody horror — work in nerve-wracking harmony. From the freeze-frame opening credits to the last-second plot twist, it all comes together beautifully. The only thing keeping it from being a perfect re-creation of those early 1980s horror movies? Frankly, “House of the Devil” is just too good."

CINEMATICAL
"The House of the Devil was not only my favorite horror film of 2009, but in my humble opinion, one of the best of the year in any genre. Borrowing inspiration from 1970s and '80s "auteur" horror films like those of Roman Polanski (Rosemary's Baby) and Stanley Kubrick (The Shining), writer-director Ti West created a modern-day vintage masterpiece with his tale of a babysitter terrorized by a crew of Satanic cultists. And it's not only his influences, but his effectiveness rendering a believable 1980s world – both cinematically and on-camera – which left me unsurprised when an odd-shaped package arrived at my house last week from the good folks at MPI Media containing an actual videotape of the film."

MONSTERS and CRITICS
"House of the Devil has a grainy, familiar feel to those of us growing up on horror movies in the home video age.  In my mind, the film that House of the Devil bears a resemblance to is the first Halloween film and that’s a good thing."

POPMATTERS

"House of the Devil is a very different creature of the night. West shows all of his influences, ranging from Polanski to Kubrick. This is clearly a filmmaker who did his time watching Rosemary’s Baby, When a Stranger Calls and The Hills Have Eyes and expects his audience to have done the same. What he creates is less a riff on these films and more a kind of formal experiment in faithful reproduction. "

MSN
"Ti West's old-school horror seems to come from another time, specifically the boom of the early '80s. There's a baby sitter (Jocelin Donahue), an isolated house in the middle of nowhere, and devil worshippers (Tom Noonan and Mary Woronov, appropriately creepy) but, title aside, this simple but effective little thriller is more John Carpenter than "Friday the 13th," favoring mood and tension over spectacle. It's a smart, shivery little film. The DVD and Blu-ray include two commentary tracks (one by director West and actress Donahue, another by West with the producers and production designer), a decent making-of and a short promotional featurette."

MANIA
"The film takes its sweet time to get going; you need to tolerate 75 minutes of long, torturous build-up in exchange for 20 minutes of pay off. It's absolutely necessary in order for director Ti West to create the atmosphere he's after, and the end results reward patient viewers admirably."

E INSIDERS
"Ti West has been known for a few years as an "up and coming" horror director, but "The House of the Devil" is proof that he's arrived (let's ignore "Cabin Fever 2"). It's one of the best American horror movies in recent memory."

BIG SHINY ROBOT
"“The House of the Devil” is a beautifully crafted film with the characters, plot, tension and dialogue you don’t normally see in a Horror film of this era. That is not to say I haven’t enjoyed any of the recent outings of the horror genre. But writer/director, Ti West has made a film that perfectly embodies the phrase, “It’s not the destination, it’s the journey.” And let me tell you, the journey was fucking terrifying. "

AINT IT COOL NEWS
"And for the record, I'm not making a dime off any copy of this. I just happen to think this is something that those old-school horror fans or VHS collectors might find extremely cool. The price seems very reasonable, so go crazy people."

Jan 29—STORY BREAKS in Variety and Shocktilyoudrop:

Ti WEST PREPPING "THE INNKEEPERS"

Ti West will follow-up his critically acclaimed House Of The Devil with The Innkeepers, a spooky story about the last two staffers of a haunted hotel that's going out of business.

MPI Media Group's Dark Sky Films will finance and produce along with Larry Fessenden's Glass Eye Pix. Derek Curl, Fessenden and Peter Phok produce.

West said he intends for Innkeepers to be "a truly terrifying" follow-up to his last pic. Lensing is set to commence in Connecticut this spring.

"The House of the Devil is engrossing and unnerving despite its minimal dialogue and disinterest in overt scares. The cinematography, sound design, and especially the score are all outstanding. There's not a weak link or misstep anywhere along the line, really. Viewers weaned on Saw sequels and desaturated shakycam flicks might be bored with it, but for those of us who grew up with atmospheric, suspenseful horror like The Changeling -- a long-time favorite of mine and one of the touchstones pointed to in the extras -- The House of the Devil is essential viewing. Highly Recommended."
Adam Tyner DVD Talk

One of the Best HORROR films of the DECADE

Here's the thing about Larry Fessenden. He's an intellectual horror filmmaker. He uses his films as a way to explore philosophical ideas like subjective perception (Habit) and the random cruelty of life (Wendigo). His movies are frequently atmospheric and involving, and while the gulf between the visceral and cerebral can be awkward, I find his films consistently exciting.

That admiration continues with The Last Winter, which is his biggest film yet, his most ambitious, and, at times, his best. This time, Fessenden has oil on the mind, and his way of adapting such a contemporary fear into the horror sphere is brilliant: since oil is composed of dead animal and plant matter, it's not much of a stretch to suggest that humanity's living on the ghosts of the ancient dead.

Odd post in the middle of a debate about 90's movies on Pop Syndicate:

That being said, the be all, and end all of psychological horror films for me was Larry Fessenden’s Habit (1996). I once watched it seven consecutive nights in a row. What Ice Station Zebra was for Howard Hughes, Habit is for me. Very nice NYC settings, great soundtrack that perfectly mixes original classical and pop songs, great cinema verite directing and acting. The problem is, it’s a very low key, slow burn about cultural vampirism and narcissism which tends to put people off. But it’s a brilliant movie that I really obsess over. Fessenden also made 1991’s No Telling, which is also a decent psychological horror film. full post
