8.) “The Pod” – If you love somebody, would you take a mind-altering drug for them? Jeremiah Kipp’s effectively creepy short focuses on a downtown New York couple who test the boundaries of their relationship via a narcotized link. A wonderfully sinister production design keeps the viewer on edge, while the sublime Larry Fessenden confirms his standing as a national treasure as the sinister drug dealer responsible for this adventure. AUTOMATONS OPENS TODAY!! DECEMBER 13 2006

"...the movie’s loving attention to light and shade transcends
its hermetic setting and meager budget.
At times the buzzing static and fizzy backlighting recall
the glistening surrealism of the filmmaker Guy Maddin...
enormously endearing"
NY TIMES

"Automatons is what happens when Eraserhead and Tetsuo the Iron Man
bong themselves into oblivion and collaborate on a
minimalist avant-garde sci-fi cheapie shot in a toolshed...
Robot radness achieved! Budgets are for bitches. "
VILLAGE VOICE

"It’s sci-fi existentialism at its rawest—a kind of WAITING FOR ROBOT,
if Samuel Beckett’s tale had involved warring machinery...
the best Super-8 home movie made by a 12-year-old boy in the body of an adult
that I’ve seen in a very long time. "
FANGORIA

(3 STARS)
Ed Wood, the notorious director of Plan 9 From Outer Space and Glen or Glenda,
has risen from the dead and returned to filmmaking as James Felix McKenney...

And I mean that as a compliment."
NY POST

"It's not a film of compromise but of sheer determination, refusing to be defined by its budget
and liberated by a decision to overcome its bank account with sheer imagination...
as is true with all the great experiments in camp, the frills don't matter
when there are firm — and fascinating — ideas behind them."
NY SUN

Jeff Winner's Satellite opens AUGUST 9 at the Pioneer Theater in NYC. One week only!!

(FOUR STAR REVIEW)

‘Satellite’ shows wild side of love
MOVIE REVIEW
By Jay Carr, am NEW YORK

“Satellite” is a quite wonderful little surprise. It’s fresh, original and immediate...

...you feel a rush of adrenaline as you sense the film wants to be as authentic in its emotions as the young couple strives to be. Lots of NYC locations, either seen on the fly or basked in — as when the nearly broke couple sells their belongings on the stoop of his brownstone—add to the spontaneity filmmaker Jeff Winner achieves in the give-and take between the lovers...

...Geary’s face is unfailingly expressive and Szostak delivers one of the year’s best performances, conveying Ro’s impulsiveness, bravery and conflicting drives. One hesitates to pigeonhole so sure and lighthanded a film by referring to it as a relationship movie or a date movie, although this film year has yet to offer a better example of either. From the moment Ro decides to follow Kevin home from a bar to an ending you should have seen coming, but never do, “Satellite” is a cascade of recklessness, sweetness and intimacy, inferring in a beguiling urban fairy-tale way that you only arrive at the last two if you give yourself over to the first.

Breaking All the Rules, 21st-Century Style, in 'Satellite'
By Stephen Holden, NY TIMES

"Satellite," a captivating romantic fairy tale for grown-ups, is narrated by a child whose identity isn't revealed until the end. Made on a shoestring and shown at the Tribeca Film Festival, it could be a springboard for the careers of its writer and director, Jeff Winner, and its smoldering star, Stephanie Szostak. A gap-toothed French model with a faint, untraceable accent, Ms. Szostak combines Audrey Tautou's gamine beauty with the seething inner turbulence of Jeanne Moreau's Catherine in "Jules and Jim."...
..."Satellite" is not a profound film, but it touches a chord. It captures the wistful underside of the rampant materialism embraced by the young professional class. Fervently believing in unconditional love, it puts it to the test, and it passes, but just barely. After all, it is a fairy tale.

If there's a better independent date movie out there right now, I haven't seen it.

June 20: AUTOMATONS INVASION!

Here are some of the nice things folks have said about the Automatons official site and trailer:

Johnny Butane, The Horror Channel:
"Why the hell haven't we been covering this movie more?"

Matt Withers, Arrow in the Head:
"Cool concept, and the trailer is a lot of fun. This is probably a get it or don't get it kind of project, but in my case I was definitely grooving to the vibe."

Carlos R. Wiscovich, Creature Corner:
"AUTOMATONS Filmed in ROBO-MONSTERVISION: 50's style Robots. In glorious black & white. With Angus(The Tall Man)Scrimm. And that's without a doubt, one of the coolest posters I've seen in a long while."

Todd, Twitchfilm.net:
"David Tennant et al may be hard at work updating Doctor Who for the current day and age but this looks as though it could have been made in the early days of BBC sci-fi, all grainy black and white and robots made of boxes, bowls and dryer vent tubing. God, yes."

Places that YOU can see the Automatons (2006) trailer include: the Official Site, Automatons on Myspace, MonsterPants on Myspace, Google Video, Yahoo Video, YouTube and ifilm.

SUNDAY 26 MARCH: Glass Eye Pix Alums in the Old Grey Lady

Kelly Reichardt's Old Joy featured in THE NEW YORK TIMES Arts & Leisure section in advance of screenings at New Director/New Films Monday and Wednesday this week.

In Change is A Force of Nature, Dennis Lim celebrates Reichardt's fim
and her approach to filmmaking, concluding his article:

... Ms. Reichardt recounted the experience of taking "Ode" to the Venice International Film Festival. After the screening of her tiny Super 8 movie, she sat contentedly on the shores of the Lido with her producer, Susan Stover, looking out at the glittering boat parties to which they had not been invited. "I had a realization then about how I wanted to keep working," she said. "Making a film any other way is like fighting to get into a party I don't want to be at."

Dave Gebroe's ZOMBIE HONEYMOON

sighted in THE NEW YORK TIMES Styles section in
Market For Zombies? It's Undead (Aaaahhh!)

featuring quotes by our favorite Zombie Afficianado, Max Brooks (Zombie Survival Guide: Complete Protection From the Living Dead):

... Most zombie zealots seem to agree that the zombie renaissance has something to do with the anxieties of life after Sept. 11.
"People have apocalypse on the brain right now," Mr. Brooks said. "It's from terrorism, the war, natural disasters like Katrina." Several zombie aficionados said there was a zombielike quality to the spread of the bird flu ...
