"The most important part of being a theater critic is the rare occasion of being in the position to say "for God's sake check this out." This is one of those times. The Heather Woodbury Report, a "living, one woman performance novel in eight episodes," is a tour de force involving a hundred different characters. Every week is another episode; I saw No. 5. Heather Woodbury is a brilliant writer. Her dialogue is so creative, so positively Joycean, so dense and lyrical in its wordplay that I wished I could read the script simply to have time to enjoy the extreme craft. Woodbury is equally impressive as an actress, comfortable and believable as people of different sexes, ages, and ethnicities. Among the more memorable characters are Skeeter, a model of a stoner eloquence who's smitten with Santa Cruz rave girls Clove and Sable; and Violet, an elderly woman who (in a highlight of the evening that could be pulled out of context as a perfect monologue or short story) tells her cleaning lady about how she once wished to make a room in her house that would represent jazz. This is incredible work, so don't worry about coming in late. Woodbury is so good it won't matter."
